I am the author of four books.
The newest, which will appear from Princeton University Press in September 2021, is Plagues upon the Earth: Disease and the Course of Human History. It is a history of infectious disease that I started writing as I finished my last book in 2017. The book begins with the origins of Homo sapiens and finishes with COVID-19, and it tries to bring a global perspective throughout. Writing this book during a pandemic has been surreal, challenging, motivating, etc. More details forthcoming soon.
In 2017 I published The Fate of Rome: Climate, Disease, and the End of an Empire with Princeton University Press. I feel very honored that the book has been translated into twelve languages and reached a readership worldwide.
In 2013, I published From Shame to Sin: The Christian Transformation of Sexual Morality, with Harvard University Press.
In 2011, I published Slavery in Late Antiquity, AD 275-425 with Cambridge University Press. The book is a heavily revised version of my doctoral thesis.
